Test Post for images in comments

Hi Folks!

UPDATE: IE appears to be working. Confirm?

OK, this is how it works (at least for now).

Let's say your image is at http://foo.com/bar.jpg

Where you want your image to show up in the comment, type this in the comments box:
img:"http://foo.com/bar.jpg"
More generally, what you type is
img:"url"
(So what is in bold is exactly what you type, and what is in italics is replaced by the url that your image resides at.)

In other words, type the url of the image you want to post, and then surround the url with quotes, and precede it with img:.

Now, let's say you have a big image - the kind that would have messed up the layout at certain other blogs. You used to have to add the width="385" attribute to the <img /> tag... remember?
So here, it's a bit simpler. What you type is
imgw:"url"
(Note the 'w').

Please test. I'm interested specifically if this works across the browsers we use.

I apologize for not having a fancy button for this yet; first I want to see if the scheme works. I'm kinda shocked what a hack this is, but it does seem to work in Firefox and Safari.

I also apologize that it took me a while, thanks for your patience.

UPDATE: as of now, "preview" will not display the image, but I think I can fix that.

I'm also interested to see how browsers will perform when there are many large images in a long thread. So go wild!

This thread is the "PG" rated thread; the "R" rated thread is immediately prior.

  2. Okay, test test test:

  3. When I tried to post from photobucket the first time, I got the error message:

Your HTML cannot be accepted. Attribute "TARGET" is not allowed in tag:A

So I took out the tags and tried again. You can see the failed result.

Let me try again from a different source. Woo-hoo!

  4. Okay, I copied image location directly from google images: I typed in img: and added quotes around the image address. 1..2..3..

    img:"http://www.zwani.com/graphics/good_morning/images/111.gif"

  5. Excellent! Okay, working on photobucket. Last time I copied the html code. This time I'm using img code, as is:

    [IMG]http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt358/redhawkclan/grouphug.jpg[/IMG]

  6. Okay, that didn't work. Let's try taking the brackets off the first IMG, making it lower case, and adding a colon, then quotation marks. On the backside, I'm removing the bracket and IMG tag and adding quotation marks.

    img:"http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt358/redhawkclan/grouphug.jpg"

  7. THAT worked. Yippee! I love you, Lewy!

I have an early class, but I'll be back later to play.

  23. Should I be seeing images here in the comments? Silly question I know, but I'm not seeing any images at all. Windows XP Pro and IE8.

  33. Still nothing here, Ari. I think I have Google Chrome installed on this machine. I'll try that.

Keyboards are cheap now, you know. :)

What's up with word verification on every comment? Used to be one verification was all that was needed. Is that something you could change, Lewy? Or... is it just me, or my machine, again?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Works perfect in Google Chrome. And worth it you funny guys. That Pelosi/Emanuel picture grosses me out by the way.

    Anyway, IE8/7 problem then.

  35. Pelosi....Rahm.....
    Ah, l'amour

    :OX

Okay, cool discovery, lewy! Looks easy, which means I will probably not be able to get it to work! :OD

  37. Yay!
Now...how do we limit the size? Perhaps the same way we did on the regular page?
    Hmmm.
Must have coffee now, think later.

    ReplyDelete
  38. MW...size is limited by typing imgw: instead of img:

Lewy apparently has it set to automatically go to 385 wide, etc. with the w in there.

    ReplyDelete
  39. MW, what the heck is that?

Is there a way for this blog and the other one to remember my details, rather than having to log in for every comment?

Or a scary giant glacier precipice on the beach. Whichever we prefer ;O)

  54. annie, thanks for stopping by and helping me test!

I have the commenting profile set up like TCKT now... if you are logged into your Google account it should remember you and let you post without a CAPCHA....

    ReplyDelete
  55. Annie, that was funny as hell, though it gave my poor heart a twinge of fear, can one even imagine now what the world was like before the internet. I actually had a life back then. :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks, MW. I was thinking that but it was so good I couldn't convince my brain that that's what it was. Was that you on the precipice?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Well, not on THAT precipice...
    ;O)
I don't think I even have that much chalk anyways!

  58. Lewy, it's my pleasure to help you test this site. Anything but clean my oven. :-p. Well done for figuring out all the coding and bugs and stuff. We just take all the mechanics for granted, forgetting that someone is slogging away at the blood and guts of the site. (I may be exaggerating slightly...). :-D

Luther, LOL, I love that "end of internet" pic. I sent it out to my kids...

And now to test if my nic is remembered for next time...

    ReplyDelete
  59. Lewy, I'm not posting from my google account, but from a name/URL profile. Is there any way to make the site remember me?

BTW what CAPCHA were you talking about? There wasn't any capcha for name/URL, and when I posted from my google account and name/URL on TCKT I didn't see one either.

    ReplyDelete
  60. annie, I'm not aware of a direct way to get blogspot blogs to remember the name/URL from one post to the next... I'll look into what it would take to code that in...

I thought maybe you were encountering a CAPCHA - we have them turned off for both this blog and TCKT now.
